Rooms within rooms: looking through to the Long Room, the oak screen was bought from a house in Suffolk.

The Long Room is the drawing room of the house; the arts and crafts simplicity is enlivened by some strong colours.

A large Mortlake tapestry along which are lined a selection of antique chairs.

All about light

A family friend, the Hon. Neville Lytton, fondly described the house in the early years: ‘The rooms are long and full of light. There is little furniture; one or two beautiful chests and chests of drawers, three or four tapestries and three or four pictures, a splendidly solid dining table, a few good chairs.’ Something of this sense of restraint remains today, although oak furniture, tapestry and old portraits are enlivened with richly coloured textiles introduced by Helga de Silva, the Sri-Lankan wife of the late Jonathan Blow, historian and writer, son of the architect.
